Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees 2–6 m tall, bark usually reddish, peeling.

Stems: Young branches terete (cylindrical), sparsely puberulent when young, soon glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades obovate to elliptic–obovate, 3.5–13.5 cm long, (2.5–)3–6 cm wide. Apex bluntly cuspidate. Base attenuate to cuneate. Surfaces glabrous or glabrate; aromatic, leathery; upper surfaces glossy dark green; lower surfaces paler. Margins entire. Pinnately veined, both surfaces with scarcely raised lateral veins. Petioles 5–10 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually solitary in the leaf axils, peduncles 4–8 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Hypanthium well–developed above ovary, splitting when flower opens. Calyx of 4–5 sepals; sepals ca.4–5 mm long, persistent in fruit. Corolla of 4–5 petals, white, obovate, ca. 5–7 mm long. Stamens white, numerous, distinct; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior, (2)3–4(–7)-celled; ovules numerous, placentation axile; style terminal, simple.

Fruit: Berries red to purplish red or occasionally yellow; globose to obovoid or ellipsoid; glossy and smooth; 2–3 cm in diameter; the pulp white. Seeds numerous; ca. 5 mm long; smooth.

Ploidy: 2n = 88

Habitat: Disturbed mesic forest and wet forest.

Elevation Range: 15–1,220 m.
